Tenango Raccoon
This idea contrast the black and white of the raccoon with the colorful Otomi embroidery

Based on the Otomi embroidery commonly known as "Tenango" this idea is to contrast the black and white off the raccoon with the colorful environment that surrounds it.

Which animal(s) did you choose as a visual and why?

The main animal on the composition is the racoon and it includes some other animals he commonly on its diet: fish, insects, frogs, worms, eggs. I wanted to use the traditional style of the otomi embroidery which uses a lot of animals in its design and contrast it with a black and white animal. Raccoons are smart and very crafty and one of the few animals outside apes and monkeys that use their hands to manipulate objects.

What culture or region does the animal stand for?

Raccoons are originally from America, in spanish are called "Mapaches" from the Nahuatl "mapakali" meaning roughly "that which has hands".

What story does your design tell?

This idea is to contrast the black and white of the raccoon with the colorful Otomi embroidery

What style did you choose for your design and why?

he Embroidery style Known as "Tenango" is an Otomi form of art usually from the region of Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo State (Mexico center) Raccoons are not usually represented in "Tenangos" but i wanted to use this animal as an outsider to the style. Contrasting its lack of color with the colorful style of flora and fauna usually represented in Tenangos
