I wanted to choose something that represents the specificity of natural adaptation in reptiles, birds, mammals, fish, amphibians. So I wanted the drawing also to be descriptive of the animal's features in detail and it's natural habitat. I also wanted to choose animals that are endemic to my country México. The maccaw is chosen as the representative of the birds.
Which animal(s) did you choose as a visual and why?
I chose the red maccaw as representative of the birds given it's cultural importance and the evolution of it's feathers can be a great visual feature.
What culture or region does the animal stand for?
The macaws have a Neotropical distribution from Mexico to Argentina. In ancient mexican cultures, they were valued for their feathers for headpieces. They were valued in many cultures, for the mayans it signified the incarnation of the sun.
What story does your design tell?
On one side it is a look up close, the detail of the adaptation of this particular type of animal:the feathers as they evolve into more colors. On the other side we find the oppposite, a look from a far, contemplating it's magnificence in the distance in it's natural habitat as well as descriptive of the habits of the animal, macaws have monogamous life partners whom they fly with in sync.
What style did you choose for your design and why?
I chose to use pencil colors because it gives me a certain fluidity for creation that comes with the memory of having drawn with pencil colors as a child. I imposed myself with a no black rule to make it more colorfull.
