Stairs Into The Stars
Moscow Uni is a unique place serving both as a social lift and literally a path into the skies

Solution

I tried to represent the complex as a literal journey from its footsteps towards the stars. Faith in humanity and almost theomachist optimism weren't uncommon for the Soviet era, the time when the construction took place. State atheism made people believe in their supremacy over nature and, curiously, pushed them towards great accomplishments in science, such as early space exploration, connected to this very university. It may be a reminder of the history behind it and probably even an encouragement to believe in high objectives and human's potential in pushing the limits.

Which place, city and country is featured in your design? (place/city/country)

Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia

Describe why you have chosen this place as a visual? What story does your design tell?

My alma mater and the world's only skyscraper hosting an educational facility is definitely overshadowed by Moscow's other monuments like Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral, while deserving to be known and seen, to my mind. It's always inspired me with its gigantic dimensions and a ziggurat-like shape, drawing parallels with the Biblical conquer of the skies in Ancient Babylon. In fact, Moscow's alumni were the first to launch an artificial satellite and send a human into space.

To be featured on social media as the Victorinox "Pick of the Day", please write a short statement about yourself (see more details in the brief).

Hi, I'm Lamberto Miller, I'm 25 and live in Milan, Italy. I studied fine arts in Russia and have been working as an illustrator for about six years. I tried to recompose the shapes of the building in order to underline product's form. In my opinion, decorative red stripes also play well with the corporate identity. The building was simplified and stylized for a better perception on the real scale. The hand drawings were made with watercolours, scanned and digitally elaborated.
