Inspired by Heliconias and Hummingbirds: two of the many beautiful species found in Colombia.

Solution

I hand-drew all my motifs and then vectorized and coloured them in Ai. The middle border pattern layout was also done in Ai. I then applied water-colour textures in Ps. In order to obtain the large scale effect, the repeat tile ended up being very big.

Why does your design stand out?

I think it stands out for its romantic, delicate and sophisticated feel. The different layers and textures help add interest and make you want to look deeper to notice all the little details it has.

I used to photos to mock-up the design. I also use some water-colour Ps brushes I downloaded from here: http://soulspoison.deviantart.com/art/28-Ink-and-Watercolor-Brushes-300950531 (the owner allows to use them for commercial purposes).

How big is the repeat in your pattern? If you’re scaling your design on a large area with a large repeat, keep this in mind when choosing your dpi.
