Waves and Cranes
Koi resembles "affection" while cranes are symbols of "fortune and longevity" in Japanese culture

Solution

I created this design based on the traditional Japanese pattern. The waves pattern on the front side was inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The koi fish on the front cover, which resembles love, was added to imbue color and dynamic into the design. As for the back cover, my approach was to create herds of cranes flying through thick clouds. Cranes are magnificent creatures that resemble fortune and longevity in Japanese culture.
