Kabuki - a traditional entertaining Japanese theater with bright makeup, originated in the Edo era. Like the Buddhist temple gatekeepers A and HUM: one opened his mouth, the other closed. One speaks the mantra "A", the first syllable of the Sanskrit alphabet, the other the mantra "HUM" (Japanese un, or n), the last syllable. Together the two mantras a+hum ("alpha and omega"), beginning and end, make up the totality of all things.
